Compassionate classrooms - Understanding student mental health

The Canadian Mental Health Association, Alberta Division (a member organization of the AAMIMH), and the Alberta Teachers' Association, have created a booklet, Compassionate classrooms - Understanding student mental health, designed to help teachers support students in need, as well as helping teachers help themselves and colleagues to maintain good mental health. The booklet is one part of a program begun by CMHA and ATA in May 2009. It is designed to increase awareness of the mental health needs of children, and to decrease the stigmatization often associated with mental illness. The program is called Health Minds, Bright Futures.

Alliance Past Chair Honoured

On Monday, May 4, 2009, the CMHA - Edmonton Region held its annual awards recognizing the significant efforts of people in the area of mental health. Sharon Sutherland, Past Chair of the AAMIMH, received the Ron LaJeunesse Award, which recognizes advocacy efforts in the field of mental health.

 


New Executive Committee Elected

The AAMIMH elected a new Executive Committee at its March 10, 2009 General Meeting. The new Chair is Tom Shand, Executive Director of the Alberta Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association, while the two Vice Chairs are Pierre Berube, Executive Director of the Psychologists' Association of Alberta and Kaj Korvala, Executive Director of the Organization for Bipolar and Affective Disorders. Sharon Sutherland, the outgoing Chair of the AAMIMH, will assume responsibility as Past Chair on the Executive. In his opening remarks, Shand extended appreciation on behalf of the AAMIMH membership to Sharon for her service and leadership throughout her tenure as Chair.

Sutherland Elected Alliance Chair

The member organizations of the Alberta Alliance for Mental Illness and Mental Health recently elected Sharon Sutherland as its Chair. She will be joined on the Executive by Vice-Chair Pierre Berube and Treasurer Barbara Lowe.

Alliance is currently run solely by voluntary efforts from representatives of the member organizations. Member organizations must be provincial in scope with a significant emphasis on mental health and mental illness. Non-provincial organizations and interested individuals may become Associate Members. Although they do not have voting rights, they can provide input at meetings and have access to information.

The Alberta Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association continues to act as the host agency for the Alliance.
